Update from Haiti

Hey, Nathan here.

I just got back from Haiti and our president here at Integrated Fire Protection wanted me to say a few words to perhaps give you perspective of what is going on down there.

First off, I’ve never seen anything like this… I have been to New Orleans after Katrina and this is a completely different level of devastation.  Our Vice President actually helped me process through in describing it, so here’s my best shot… although perhaps a shot that still doesn’t do the people of Haiti justice.

Imagine if you were really poor- the sort of poor where you had a tin roof over your head, but no money for shoes, diapers, medicine, and food -at times.  This could already be too much of a stretch for some of us.  Then imagine the walls of your 8 by 8 foot shelter crashed down during an earthquake killing some of your family.  Your neighbors shelter didn’t come down all the way, but you don’t trust anything with walls anymore.  You’re forced to move to a tent city, a clearing of land near a creek or next to a landfill because of the promise of food/water.  The food & water is there, sometimes, but you have to fight others to get it and you still have other mouths to feed- so it’s possible this food or water will never enter your body.  Often times the strong people get to the food first and then turn and sell it to you when it was supposed to be free- the same goes for tents.  The promise of a tent is dissolved as the reality becomes a bed sheet for shade from the 90 + degree weather.  Maybe you can find a tarp before the rainy season comes…

Because the reality is, this is just the beginning… Hurricane season is coming and your community’s plot of land by the creek will soon be flooded from the several inches of rain you are daily expecting to get very soon.  Not only that, the animals and people still under the debris are decaying and will contaminate the already dirty water you’ve been using to clean/drink.  Hopefully these people here to help have a plan…

So that’s the reality we saw.  We drove by most of the worst hit areas wanting to get out and help and wondering ‘was it always like this?’

We partnered with a missionary team in Jacmel, Haiti which is on the southern side about 40 miles from Port au Prince about 25 miles from where they believe the epicenter of the earthquake to be- in Layogon.  While there, we befriended families and put up tents for a family/clan of about 40-60 people living under some sheets draped a few feet above splintered plywood.  The next couple days we would partner with the Haitians in tearing down walls and putting in foundations for new homes with their homemade cement, all the while thinking that perhaps this is just a ‘bandaid.’   With the supplies we brought, we were able to bring them food and shelter and it was a start- a humble one at that.

Each day we prayed with the people, played with the kids and hoped that the sounds of laughs would continue.

We will be going back with bigger teams, but this trip was to get a vision of what is already going on and how we can maximize manpower and resources to make a lasting foundational difference for the people of Haiti.

The people of Haiti are hopeful, resourceful, and very thankful as some of them have never seen a doctor or been given clean water.  We trust that there are more things going on here than just relief work…

I really want to thank the leadership at Integrated Fire Protection for supporting me in this endeavor but more importantly having compassion on the people of Haiti.

Call and Response: Haiti

Though no strangers to responding to disaster, Integrated Fire Protection and the rest of the world was in shock when the earthquake hit Haiti earlier this year in January.  Feelings of helplessness and sorrow turned into action across the country as people began giving by way of texts and phone calls to organizations like the Red Cross and Wyclef Jean’s Disaster Relief Fund.

But how is a fire protection company supposed to help a place that seems so distant and with a need seemingly overwhelming?

In times like this, quotes like this one from Edmund Burke surface and really bring perspective:  “Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little…”

aftermath from the earthquake

So that’s what one of the employees from IFP, Nathan Gallentine,  is doing. Partnering up with a local church in Atlanta and a Haitian group that has been committed to serving orphans and widows in Haiti for many years, he is simply moving to that place of greatest need.  But it’s not just him going… From the generous support of the staff, bed sheets, mosquito repellant, and funds for a plane ticket have enabled Integrated Fire Protection to partner and share in the work that will be going on in Port au Prince, Haiti.  As a visionary trip, this trip will be the beginning of a partnership to find and meet some of Haiti’s most imminent needs.

We’ll get him to create a post for us to reflect on what he saw and where to go from here.  We hope that anyone reading this will join by combining our efforts, prayers, and resources to continued progress in Haiti.

The New “Fleet”

It is no secret that Integrated Fire Protection has been at the forefront of many developments, implementations, and lobbying for advances in the fire protection industry.

This internal development is a bit different and has to do with the mother of all inventions – necessity.  When you are known for your efficiency, it’s important to bring that to every arena of your business.  Integrated Fire Protection’s Fire Extinguisher division is no different.  As a technician, there is a necessity to move large amounts of fire extinguishers quickly and efficiently through a facility.  The problem is: fire extinguishers don’t stack well and are a bit too tall to stay balance on a hand truck etc.

Here’s where the quick, innovative thinking of one of our technicians came in.  Taking the initiative to develop a better solution, he put together plans for way to transport several extinguishers safely, efficiently, and quickly.  Integrating a dolly and a steady wood-working hand, the technician fashioned the perfect solution to this stressful problem.  See pictures below.

While currently in the process of patenting, Integrated Fire Protection’s trademark orange  ”fleet” of extinguisher transporters are sure to be turning heads in the industry for years to come…

Tis better to give…

After a great year, the tradition at Integrated Fire Protection has always been a Christmas gift exchange. While this is always looked forward to by the employees, recent changes in the economy and the culture at IFP surfaced a different sort of Holiday tradition.

Misty Connell, IFP’s Sales Support Specialist, and Noel Gilliam, IFP’s Sprinkler Inspection Coordinator, were inspired after hearing about local Toys for Tot’s Drives around the city. Each with families and children of their own, the thought of children without gifts during the Christmas and Holiday season was tough to bear. This perspective shift birthed an idea to forego the usual gift exchange to provide for children in tough situations all over the country.

The office exploded with the giving spirit and soon the original box overflowed. Two and a half moving boxes later, the fruit of the idea was seen as the Integrated Team sent off the toys to a local drop off location.

The Integrated Fire Protection team would also like to take the time to wish you, your family, and your businesses a Merry Christmas, a Happy Holidays and blessed New Year.
